New Delhi, 03 April (H.S.):

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday participated in the Census-2027 self-enumeration drive by entering his family's details on the online portal at his Delhi residence. Sharing the update on X, he urged citizens to join this national campaign.

Birla described it as the dawn of a new era, noting India's first fully digital census empowers individuals to self-record data securely, accurately, and conveniently.

The Census-2027 formally began April 1, 2026, with President Droupadi Murmu leading via self-enumeration, followed by Vice President CP Radhakrishnan, PM Narendra Modi, and Home Minister Amit Shah.

Phase I Details

Phase I (House Listing and Housing Census) runs April 1 to September 30, 2026, collecting data on 33 questions about housing, amenities, assets, and infrastructure. Self-enumeration is available in 16 languages with encryption and multi-factor authentication, issuing a unique ID upon completion. Traditional door-to-door surveys continue, preceded by a 15-day self-entry window.

Initial rollout covers Andaman & Nicobar, Goa, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Odisha, Sikkim, and Delhi's NDMC/Cantonment areas.
