East Bardhaman, 27 April (H.S.): A Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor from Ward No. 22 of Bardhaman town in East Bardhaman district has been arrested on charges of obstructing police work and issuing threats. The accused, identified as Narugopal Bhakat, was taken into custody early Monday morning during a joint operation by police and central forces at his residence.
According to allegations, the accused had threatened police personnel and attempted to hinder their duties. He reportedly claimed that police would need his permission before entering the area, sparking widespread outrage.
The incident is linked to events on March 24, when BJP candidate from Bardhaman South, Moumita Biswas Mishra, was out campaigning along with local leader Mahadev Mal. Later that night, Mahadev Mal’s house was allegedly attacked, with reports of stone-pelting that created panic in the area.
On information, Bardhaman police and central forces reached the spot. At that time, TMC councillor Narugopal Bhakat also arrived and allegedly made controversial remarks directed at the police and central forces. A video of the incident went viral, prompting swift action from the district administration and drawing the attention of the Election Commission.
Police sources said that multiple charges have been filed against the accused, including attempt to murder, threatening a public servant, and violations under the Arms Act. He is scheduled to be produced before the Bardhaman district court.
Notably, the second and final phase of polling in West Bengal is scheduled for April 29, which includes Assembly constituencies in East Bardhaman. The arrest of a TMC councillor ahead of the elections has heightened tension in the area.
The Election Commission has intensified security measures to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections. Authorities are maintaining strict surveillance and taking preventive steps to avoid any untoward incidents before, during, and after the polling process.
