Kolkata, 21 April (H.S.): The Election Commission has imposed strict restrictions on motorcycle movement in West Bengal ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, beginning two days before polling. In a notification issued on Tuesday, the Commission said no motorcycle rallies would be permitted before voting. It also announced a ban on motorcycle movement from 6 pm to 6 am. Several regulations will also remain in force for the use of motorcycles on polling day.
The Commission clarified that the restrictions would not apply in emergency situations such as medical needs, family necessities, or taking children to and from school. People travelling for social functions have also been exempted. App-based transport services will likewise remain outside the purview of the restrictions.
Anyone seeking exemption under special circumstances must obtain written permission from the local police station.
The office of the Chief Electoral Officer has been directed to widely publicise the restrictions through newspapers, television channels and social media platforms. The Commission said the measures are aimed at ensuring free and fair polling and must be enforced strictly.
The first phase of polling in the state will be held on Thursday, April 23, across 152 Assembly constituencies. Accordingly, motorcycle-related restrictions have already come into effect in the concerned areas from Monday.
The second phase of voting will take place on April 29 for 142 seats, and similar restrictions will come into force from April 27.
