Guwahati, 20 April (H.S.):

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Ubaid Ullah, a key conspirator in a cyber fraud network, under Operation Chakra, an initiative aimed at dismantling organised cybercrime.

According to the CBI, the arrested accused was the organiser of illegally issued SIM cards in Guwahati and had been absconding since August 2025. He was arrested on Sunday morning. Investigation has revealed that the accused transferred around Rs 67 lakh through various bank accounts to POS agents, through which nearly 10,000 illegal SIM cards were obtained. Evidence of courier-based transactions for obtaining these SIM cards has also been found.

The CBI said search operations have so far been carried out at around 45 locations across eight states, and 10 POS agents involved in the illegal issuance of SIM cards have been arrested. These SIM cards were being used by cybercriminals for fraudulent digital arrest scams, loan fraud and investment frauds. The agency said the search for other conspirators is continuing.
