
Kharagpur, 18 April (H.S.): A 21-year-old student of IIT Kharagpur died on Saturday after allegedly jumping from a hostel building on the campus, triggering concern over recurring student deaths at the premier institute.
The incident occurred at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Hall, from where the student reportedly jumped. Police from Hijli outpost under Kharagpur Town police station rushed to the spot after receiving information.
The student, identified as Jaibir Singh Dodiya, a Mechanical Engineering student and resident of Nehru Hall, was found in a critical condition and taken to B.C. Roy Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
According to police, the student hailed from Ahmedabad. The exact reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained. Investigators are questioning friends and acquaintances to determine whether he was under any mental stress or depression.
Officials said a detailed probe is underway.
The incident adds to a series of similar cases reported from the campus in recent times. In 2025 alone, seven students died under abnormal circumstances between January and December, raising serious concerns within academic circles.
Among those reported dead last year were Shovan Malik (January 12), Aniket Walkar (April 21), Mohammad Asif Kamar (May 4), Ritam Mondal (July 18), Chandradwip Pawar (July 22), Harsh Kumar Pandey (September 20) and Bhattaram Sharan Kumar (December 7).
The latest death has once again brought focus on student well-being and mental health issues on campus.
