Hooghly, 18 April (H.S.): Outgoing MLA from Chinsurah, Asit Majumdar, has been hospitalised on Saturday after falling ill due to extreme heat while campaigning in Hooghly district, sources said.
Majumdar said he took ill while campaigning for Trinamool Congress candidate Debanshu Bhattacharya and was later admitted to a private nursing home in the district.
Doctors attending on him said he is suffering from heatstroke (“loo”), along with fluctuations in blood pressure, stomach infection and complications related to diabetes. He has been advised complete rest for the next few days and is currently under medical supervision.
“I fell ill due to heatstroke while campaigning. Doctors have advised rest, so I will not be able to participate in election campaigning for now,” Majumdar said.
Notably, Majumdar had earlier expressed dissatisfaction after being denied a party ticket and had even hinted at quitting politics. He later resumed political activities following intervention by the party leadership.
He had also made public allegations against Hooghly MP Rachna Banerjee in recent times. However, he was regularly seen campaigning alongside Debanshu Bhattacharya in Chinsurah.
Due to health reasons, the outgoing MLA has now decided to stay away from campaign activities for the time being.
