New Delhi, 16 April (H.S.):
The Supreme Court refused to hear a petition challenging alcohol sales in tetra packs in Uttar Pradesh. A bench headed by Chief Justice Suryakant directed petitioner Meenakshi Tiwari to submit her representation to relevant authorities.
The CJI remarked that those wishing to buy liquor could do so in any form, questioning court intervention. While noting no explicit excise policy authorization for tetra packs, the bench acknowledged a February 4, 2025, administrative order permitting small packs, now on record.
Counsel argued the packaging endangers children and students, who could easily conceal them in schools or colleges. The court upheld deference to state policy on such matters.
