New Delhi, 16 April (H.S.):
Harivansh Narayan Singh, nominated by the President, filed his nomination Thursday for Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman at the secretariat, positioning him for a third term following two prior elections as JD(U) MP.
Election occurs Friday, with opposition opting out over procedural grievances, ensuring his uncontested return.
Opposition Boycotts, Cites Key Grievances
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh announced the boycott on X, clarifying no intent to disrespect Harivansh while hoping for greater accommodation in his new tenure. He listed three objections: Lok Sabha's vacant Deputy Speaker post for seven years; unprecedented nomination of a presidential appointee; lack of opposition consultation.
Last month, President nominated Harivansh post his April 9 tenure expiry, leaving the role vacant since. As Vice President's ex-officio Chairman absence, the Deputy steers proceedings.
