Kolkata, 16 April (H.S.) : Amid intensifying political activity ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Abhishek Banerjee, national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress, on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Election Commission of India (ECI).
In a post on social media platform X, Banerjee alleged that the “real work” for the BJP in West Bengal is being carried out by the Election Commission. He claimed that if anyone believes leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, or Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath are the party’s “trump cards” in the state, they are mistaken.
According to Banerjee, the Election Commission is allegedly playing a decisive role behind the scenes and functioning in line with the BJP’s directions. He further alleged that the BJP issues instructions which the poll body is “compelled” to follow.
Banerjee also claimed that during the election period, his family members and individuals associated with the Trinamool Congress are being selectively targeted.
Meanwhile, the deployment of a large number of central forces in West Bengal has triggered political debate. Reports indicate that around 2550 companies of central forces have been stationed in the state as part of election security arrangements.
Questioning the move, Banerjee said such forces are needed more in other states but are being deployed in West Bengal. He alleged that the intention is to intimidate and suppress TMC workers.
He asserted that despite these developments, the situation would change after the election results, adding that those attempting to obstruct or threaten his party workers now would “not be seen” in the state thereafter.
