Bhubaneswar, 11 April (H.S.): The long-pending Mahanadi river water dispute is poised for fresh developments, with the Chief Ministers of Odisha and Chhattisgarh set to hold discussions under the mediation of the Central Government.

The update was shared on Saturday by Odisha Advocate General Pitambar Acharya, who also confirmed that the tenure of the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal has been extended by one year. The tribunal will now continue its proceedings until January 13, 2027.

Acharya further informed that the next hearing in the matter is scheduled for April 20. He noted that a key development emerged during the latest proceedings, with the tribunal expressing satisfaction over the ongoing dialogue between the two states aimed at reaching an amicable resolution.

In the coming days, both Chief Ministers are expected to engage in formal talks facilitated by the Centre. The tribunal has also directed that field inspection reports be included as part of the ongoing proceedings.

“Technical teams from both states have already held discussions regarding the total water yield of the Mahanadi river. Considering the dependability of the river waters for both Odisha and Chhattisgarh, detailed data on their respective water requirements have been presented. The tribunal has expressed satisfaction with these discussions, which are focused on achieving a mutually agreeable settlement,” Acharya said.
