Prime Accused of the Zubeen Garg death case Shyamkanu Mahanta.

Guwahati, 11 April (HS): In a fresh development in the case linked to the death of Assamese cultural icon Zubeen Garg, prime accused Shyamkanu Mahanta has once again approached the court seeking bail.

The new bail petition was submitted before a designated special sessions fast-track court. While the defence pushed for an early hearing on April 13, the court has fixed April 22 as the date for arguments, according to Special Public Prosecutor Ziaur Kamar.

Kamar stated that the prosecution would oppose the plea. He noted that although the defence requested an earlier date, the court decided otherwise and granted time until April 22 for the hearing. Mahanta, organiser of the North East India Festival (NEIF), had earlier filed for bail but later withdrew his application.

The latest plea comes at a significant juncture, as the trial is currently progressing on a day-to-day basis to expedite proceedings. Earlier, on April 1, Assam Advocate General Devajit Saikia had indicated that both investigation and trial were moving steadily, with the case entering a critical phase involving arguments on discharge petitions.

Proceedings in the matter are being conducted under a fast-track mechanism, underscoring its sensitivity and public importance. Family members of the deceased have expressed expectations of timely justice, while the state government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a fair and speedy trial..-----------
