Special Awareness Campaign on Lift-Escalator Safety in Delhi Metro

New Delhi, 11 April (H.S.):

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has launched a week-long special awareness campaign regarding the safe use of lifts and escalators, keeping passenger safety in mind. This campaign is being conducted across the entire metro network from April 7 to 13.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) spokesperson Anuj Dayal stated on Saturday that the Delhi Metro operates the largest system of lifts, escalators, and travelators in the country. Currently, 965 lifts, 1297 escalators, and 42 travelators are operational across the metro network.

Kashmere Gate Metro Station is the world's metro station equipped with the highest number—53 escalators.

Under this campaign, DMRC employees along with Scout and Guide volunteers have been deployed at various stations, holding placards inscribed with messages to inform passengers about safety rules. At high-footfall stations, awareness is also being created through street plays (nukkad natak).

Additionally, essential precautions are being communicated to passengers by distributing pamphlets.

The primary objective of the campaign is to sensitize passengers to the safe use of lifts and escalators, inform them about preventive measures against accidents, and motivate them to adopt better behavior.

Special guidance arrangements have also been made for elderly and differently-abled passengers.

The DMRC has advised passengers to maintain distance from lift doors while using them, refrain from forcibly opening doors, and utilize the alarm button in case of any malfunction. On escalators, one should hold the handrail while boarding, stand within the yellow line, keep children under control, and promptly disembark upon reaching the destination.

According to the DMRC, the maintenance of lifts and escalators is accorded the highest priority, but accidents often occur due to passenger negligence. It is with this in view that such a special campaign has been initiated, to render travel even safer.
