New Delhi, 10 April (H.S.):
The Supreme Court rebuked advocate Sachin Gupta on Friday for inundating the court with 25 public interest litigations spanning diverse issues, advising him to prioritize his legal practice and first approach administrative bodies rather than reflexively invoking judicial intervention.
As the matters came up before a bench presided over by Chief Justice Surya Kant, Gupta sought permission to withdraw the petitions. The court permitted this but firmly cautioned: Focus on your profession. Instead of rushing to court, sensitize government and authorities on key concerns through analytical advocacy.
CJI Kant emphasized that as a bar member, Gupta must discern substantive issues and enlighten officials accordingly, assuring that meritorious pleas would receive due consideration if administrative recourse proved futile. The bench underscored PILs' sanctity for genuine public interest, not as a shortcut bypassing executive responsibility.
