New Delhi, 10 April (H.S.):

The Supreme Court, led by Justice Surya Kant, granted significant relief to Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SuBSP) MLA Abbas Ansari from Mau, Uttar Pradesh, affirming the Allahabad High Court's suspension of a trial court conviction linked to hate speech, thereby safeguarding his legislative membership.

A trial court had sentenced Ansari, jeopardizing his assembly seat under disqualification provisions. He successfully challenged this in the High Court, which imposed a stay. The Uttar Pradesh government contested the ruling in the apex court, arguing for reinstatement of the penalty.

Ansari's victory ensures his continued representation, averting a byelection and stabilizing SuBSP's position amid ongoing legal scrutiny of his political lineage.
