New Delhi, 10 April (H.S.):
India has expressed deep concern over the large number of civilian deaths reportedly caused by Israeli strikes in Lebanon, underscoring the urgent need to protect non‑combatants and respect international law.
The statement, issued by the Ministry of External Affairs on Friday, marks New Delhi’s first official response to the deteriorating situation in West Asia.
Ranjeer Jaiswal, Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, said at a media briefing here that India has always stressed that the safety of ordinary civilians must remain the foremost priority in any conflict. “India has always emphasised that civilian protection should be the primary consideration in all military operations,” he added.
Jaiswal reiterated that compliance with international law and due respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states are essential at a time of escalating regional tensions. India, he said, believes that any use of force must be calibrated and must avoid targeting civilian infrastructure and densely populated areas.
The spokesperson also described recent attacks on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) as deeply troubling. He pointed out that these UN peacekeepers are deployed precisely to help maintain peace and security in the country and that their safety and inviolability must be strictly respected by all parties.
Addressing the safety of Indian citizens in Lebanon, Jaiswal said that Indian missions on the ground are maintaining continuous contact with local authorities and the community. “Our local mission remains in close touch with Indian nationals to monitor their safety and provide necessary assistance,” he stated, adding that appropriate contingency measures are in place.
With thousands of Indian nationals reported to be residing in Lebanon, India has said it is closely tracking the security situation and is ready to scale up consular support if the environment further deteriorates.
India has repeatedly urged restraint, de‑escalation, and dialogue as the only sustainable path to peace in West Asia.
