
New Delhi, 06 March (H.S.): The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has deployed over 5,100 female employees in day shifts across more than 1,140 toll plazas on national highways and expressways nationwide to enhance women's participation.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways stated that this initiative aims to ensure women's involvement in toll operations, generate employment opportunities, and provide travelers with a more empathetic and user-friendly environment at toll plazas. Officials noted that deploying women staff will reduce disputes and improve service quality.
NHAI consulted stakeholders, toll operators, and industry bodies like the National Highways Builder Federation, Highway Operators Association of India, and All India User Fee Contractors Federation, all of whom supported the move and agreed to daytime deployments.
NHAI will provide specialized training to these women, especially those from rural areas, covering courteous behavior, emergency handling, safety protocols, and efficient toll operations.This step will not only offer employment but also empower women socially and enable their participation in infrastructure, strengthening their position in urban and rural areas while enhancing toll plaza services.
