Guwahati, 26 March (HS): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi over his reported promise to rename Barpeta Medical College after former President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed if the party returns to power.

The Chief Minister challenged Gogoi’s statement, asserting that such a move would not be possible “in this lifetime or even in the next seven births.” The remark came in response to Gogoi’s alleged announcement at an election rally in Mandia that the medical college would be renamed if Congress forms the government.

Sarma further criticised Gogoi’s political vision, accusing him of attempting to redefine Assam’s cultural identity. He alleged that in Gogoi’s version of “greater Assam,” traditional references like Shankar-Madhav would be replaced with Shankar-Ajan, and that policies would aim to bring together illegal Bangladeshi migrants and indigenous Assamese people.

The Chief Minister also claimed that such a framework would lead to dominance by illegal immigrants, strongly condemning what he described as Gogoi’s “Bor Axom formula.” He termed the proposal detrimental to the state’s identity and interests, intensifying the political exchange between the ruling BJP and the Congress ahead of elections.------------
