Dhemaji (Assam), 25 March (HS): In a late-night incident, local residents in Dhakuakhana apprehended a suspected thief and handed him over to police after he allegedly targeted a shop in Madarguri village under Dhakuakhana Police Station.

The incident took place around 12:30 am when a group of thieves broke into a shop owned by small trader Arun Jyoti Baruah and fled with goods and cash worth ₹10,000. The owner chased the suspects but was attacked with a sharp weapon. Despite injuries, he, with the help of locals, managed to capture one accused identified as Santosh Tay of Abhaypur Lachan village.

The villagers informed the police, who arrived at night and took the accused into custody. During interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed and revealed the names of two accomplices. However, locals alleged that police have not taken prompt action to arrest the remaining accused even hours after the incident.

Residents expressed concern over rising theft cases in the area and demanded strict action, urging intervention from the district Superintendent of Police.-----------
