Thiruvananthapuram, 24 March (H.S):Senior Congress leader and former Kerala State Congress President K. Sudhakaran MP has said that Ramesh Chennithala would be a suitable candidate for the Chief Minister’s post if the United Democratic Front (UDF) comes to power in Kerala. In a candid media interaction ,Sudhakaran also indicated that he would no longer play an active role in Kerala politics going forward.
Backing Chennithala’s leadership credentials, Sudhakaran described him as a seasoned politician who understands political realities and acts with responsibility. He said Chennithala had personally reached out to him during discussions over candidate selection, reflecting his inclusive approach within the party.
Sudhakaran dismissed speculation surrounding his own political decisions, including claims that his son had intervened to dissuade him from contesting. Terming such reports “baseless,” he clarified that his decision was taken independently, keeping the party’s interests in mind. He also revealed that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had spoken to him, and he had assured the leadership that he would not take any step that could put the party in a difficult position.
On the Kannur constituency, Sudhakaran said he had no issues with UDF candidate T.O. Mohanan. He added that he had himself suggested Mohanan’s name as an alternative if he chose not to contest and was satisfied that the party had honoured that understanding.
Expressing confidence in the UDF’s prospects, Sudhakaran said the front could secure close to 100 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections. He asserted that there were no internal differences within the Congress and that the party remained united.
He also firmly ruled out any possibility of joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), reiterating his long-standing ideological commitment to the Congress.
