New Delhi, 23 March (H.S.):
Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal on Monday unleashed a blistering attack in Parliament flagging the dire state of Delhi Women Commission and demanding its immediate revival alongside filling vacant posts in women commissions nationwide during zero hour.
A rape every 15 minutes in India – and thats just the reported cases – the real mess runs far worse Maliwal thundered. She spotlighted how bodies set up in 1992 still lack teeth independent funding or real autonomy despite parliamentary panels ringing alarms for years with zero action.
State-level horror stories piled up she said. Jharkhand Women Commission shut since June 2020 with over 4000 cases gathering dust. Madhya Pradesh chair empty for six years 26000 cases frozen. Delhi Women Commission dead two years straight no chair no members – when the justice machine itself grinds to halt where do victims turn she shot back.
Maliwal flashed back to her DCW days from 2015 to 2024 when they tackled 174000 cases fielded 40 lakh helpline calls teams on 24/7 alert. She recounted rescuing a 14-year-old from torment and busting a Paharganj racket freeing 39 Nepali girls from trafficking. None of that happens without rock-solid institutions she hammered.
Political sabotage gutted Delhi panel in 2024 she charged funds choked staff axed. Her plea hit hard – Centre and states snap to it reactivate every women commission now. The Budget Session 2026 showdown laid bare a womens safety net in tatters on this Shaheed Diwas.
