Tehran, 22 March (H.S.):

In a sharp escalation of the ongoing conflict in West Asia, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that it has shot down an Israeli F‑16 fighter jet inside Iranian airspace. The incident, said to have occurred on Monday, 22 March 2026, adds a new layer of volatility to the war that has been unfolding between the United States‑Israel alliance and Iran since 28 February 2026.

Iran’s state‑linked Press TV reported that the IRGC’s Aerospace Division intercepted an Israeli F‑16 over central Iran using an air‑defence missile, describing it as a major success for Tehran’s anti‑aircraft systems. The Guards’ public relations department said the jet was targeted at 3:45 a.m. local time while allegedly violating Iranian airspace.

Tehran has also claimed to have previously hit a U.S. F‑35 stealth fighter, an assertion the Pentagon confirmed in part, saying the aircraft was damaged but the pilot ejected safely.

The IRGC said its air‑defence units have now destroyed more than 200 hostile aerial targets, including drones, cruise missiles and advanced fighter jets, over the past few weeks. Authorities in Tehran are presenting this as proof of Iran’s growing defensive and surveillance capabilities in the face of repeated strikes by Israel and the U.S.

On the other side, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have acknowledged that an Israeli fighter jet was fired upon by a missile during a mission over Iranian airspace but insist that the aircraft was not shot down. The IDF said the pilot executed an emergency ejection and landed safely in the controlled area.

The Israeli military confirmed that the aircraft had taken off from its controlled zones and was conducting an air‑strike mission inside Iran when it came under missile fire.

The clash comes in the middle of the broader regional war, in which Iran has intensified missile and drone attacks on Israeli positions and U.S. bases in the Gulf.

The downing, or near‑downing, of a modern F‑16 over central Iran is likely to be treated as a symbolic victory in Tehran, while Israel and its allies may view the survival of the pilot and aircraft as evidence of resilient air‑combat tactics.

The incident has deepened concerns among global powers, with the United Nations and several European capitals warning that the exchange of air‑power strikes could rapidly spiral into a wider conflict.

As both sides continue to announce new retaliatory rounds, the situation over West Asia appears increasingly fragile and fraught with risk.
