Lakhimpur (Assam), 22 March (HS): A fresh wave of resignations has hit the opposition camp in Assam, with both Congress and the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) witnessing defections ahead of the assembly elections.

In a significant development, AJP’s central committee secretary Achyut Saikia resigned from the party, intensifying the crisis within the regional outfit. Announcing his decision, Saikia launched a sharp attack on AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, terming him “a leader who only delivers hollow speeches.”

Saikia’s exit was accompanied by the resignation of several AJP leaders and workers from the Bihpuria constituency, indicating growing dissatisfaction at the grassroots level within the party.

The developments come at a crucial time when opposition parties are gearing up for the upcoming elections and such internal rifts are likely to impact their organisational strength and electoral prospects.-----------
