Kolkata, 21 March (H.S.): The Missionaries of Charity has issued a public advisory cautioning organisations and individuals against the unauthorised use of its name and that of Mother Teresa, including her image, for fundraising drives and promotional activities, saying such practices create confusion among the public.
In a statement issued on March 19, the organisation said it had come to its notice that certain groups and individuals were using the names of the Missionaries of Charity and Mother Teresa for various activities, particularly for raising funds, without prior permission. It clarified that such unauthorised use often misleads people, especially when linked to donation campaigns or charitable appeals.
Referring to the principles upheld by its founder, the organisation said Mother Teresa never wished that her name or image be used for fundraising or solicitation purposes, even for charitable causes. The statement also underlined her commitment to simplicity and her belief in voluntary goodwill as the basis of service.
The Missionaries of Charity urged all concerned to refrain from using the name of Mother Teresa or the organisation in any form without prior authorisation. It also warned that continued misuse could compel the organisation to take appropriate steps, including legal action, to safeguard its name and identity.
Founded in Kolkata in 1950, the Missionaries of Charity is a Catholic religious congregation dedicated to serving the poorest and most vulnerable sections of society. The organisation also appealed to the public to verify the authenticity of any group or initiative claiming association with it before extending support.
