Kannur, 20 March (H.S.):

Bringing an end to days of intense political speculation and uncertainty, senior Congress leader K. Sudhakaran arrived in Kannur early Friday morning. He landed at the Mattannur International Airport, where hundreds of party workers had gathered despite the early hours to welcome him with enthusiasm and slogans of support.

A large and emotionally charged reception was organised by his supporters, led by local leaders including Rijil Makkutty and Muhammed Shamas. The atmosphere at the airport reflected the strong backing Sudhakaran continues to enjoy among grassroots Congress workers in the district.

However, Sudhakaran appeared visibly fatigued and chose not to engage with the media. “I am tired and have no comments to make at this moment,” he briefly told reporters before leaving the airport.

His arrival comes in the backdrop of significant developments within the Congress party regarding candidate selection for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections. Despite sustained pressure from Sudhakaran and his supporters, the party high command has taken a firm stand, deciding not to allot Assembly seats to any sitting Members of Parliament.

The Kannur Assembly seat, which Sudhakaran had reportedly sought, has instead been allotted to former Kannur Mayor T.O. Mohanan. Sources indicate that the Congress leadership, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, remained resolute in their decision, signalling a broader strategy to promote new faces and maintain organisational discipline.

Meanwhile, discontent is also brewing in other quarters. Eldhose Kunnappilly has expressed strong dissatisfaction after being denied the Perumbavoor seat. He has stated that he will consult with party workers and supporters before deciding his next course of action.

The developments highlight growing internal tensions within the Congress as it prepares for a crucial electoral battle in Kerala.
