Chennai, 20 March (H.S.):

In a significant strategic shift ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has rolled out a first-of-its-kind micro-level monitoring mechanism aimed at strengthening its grassroots electoral operations.

The party has introduced a new layer of oversight by appointing dedicated nodal functionaries for every two to three polling booths across the State. These functionaries will serve as a crucial link between booth-level agents (BLAs) and the party’s central leadership, ensuring a seamless flow of information from the ground.

According to party insiders, the nodal functionaries will be responsible for submitting regular updates on campaign progress, voter outreach, and polling preparedness. This real-time reporting system is expected to give the leadership a sharper, data-driven understanding of constituency-level dynamics, allowing for swift tactical adjustments when required.

Tamil Nadu is set to have over 75,000 polling booths as per Election Commission of India (ECI) arrangements, with each booth catering to a maximum of 1,200 voters under revised norms. In this context, managing booth-level operations has become increasingly complex. While major political parties traditionally deploy agents at each polling station, the DMK’s additional monitoring tier is aimed at ensuring tighter coordination and accountability.

Party sources noted that district and constituency-level leaders often face practical challenges in directly supervising every booth, especially on polling day. The introduction of nodal functionaries is intended to bridge this gap by enabling closer supervision and faster communication.

Grassroots workers have welcomed the move, describing it as a proactive step that could significantly enhance responsiveness during the campaign. A booth-level agent in Chennai said the system would allow the party to react quickly to emerging trends and issues, based on continuous feedback from the field.

In parallel, the DMK is also strengthening its digital and organisational infrastructure. The party’s IT wing has directed all district units to establish dedicated “war rooms” to coordinate election activities. These centres will focus on data management, communication, and strategic planning.

In a statement, Industries Minister and DMK IT wing secretary T.R.B. Rajaa urged district functionaries to expedite the setup of these war rooms in consultation with local leadership, underlining their importance in ensuring a cohesive and technology-driven campaign.

With these measures, the DMK appears to be gearing up for a highly structured and closely monitored electoral battle.
