India Supports Peaceful Resolution in West Asia: PM Modi

New Delhi, 2 March (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reiterated that India supports the peaceful resolution of conflicts and will continue working with all countries to ensure the safety of Indian citizens in West Asia amid rising regional tensions.

Addressing a joint press meet with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney following bilateral talks in New Delhi, Modi said India’s position on global tensions remains clear and consistent. He stated that India has always called for maintaining peace and stability, adding that when two democracies stand together, the voice for peace becomes stronger.

Describing the current situation in West Asia as a matter of deep concern, the Prime Minister emphasised that India supports resolving disputes through dialogue and diplomacy rather than conflict. He affirmed that the government would remain engaged with all concerned nations to safeguard the interests and security of Indian nationals in the region.

The remarks come in the backdrop of escalating hostilities in West Asia following coordinated US-Israel strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliatory actions across parts of the Gulf.

On Sunday night, the Cabinet Committee on Security, chaired by the Prime Minister, reviewed the developments arising from the air strikes in Iran on February 28 and the subsequent escalation. According to an official statement, the Committee expressed serious concern over the safety and security of the large Indian expatriate community in the region.

The Committee also assessed the challenges faced by Indian travellers transiting through affected areas and students appearing for scheduled examinations, along with the broader implications for regional security and economic and commercial activities.
