India, Canada Sign Landmark Uranium Supply Pact

New Delhi, 2 March (H.S.): India and Canada on Monday signed a landmark agreement for long-term cooperation in the supply of uranium and decided to expedite the finalisation of a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA), following bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney.

The two leaders held discussions at Hyderabad House in New Delhi to review and strengthen bilateral ties across multiple sectors. Addressing a joint press meet, Prime Minister Modi said the two sides have struck a landmark deal in the civil nuclear energy sector for long-term uranium supply.

He said India and Canada would also collaborate on small modular reactors and advanced nuclear technologies. Under the agreement, Canada will supply uranium to India to support its clean energy goals.

The two sides also firmed up the terms of reference for the proposed comprehensive economic partnership agreement. Modi emphasised that both countries share a strong belief in democratic values and diversity, and are committed to advancing cooperation across all areas.

The leaders discussed enhancing defence industry collaboration, maritime domain awareness and cooperation in the critical minerals sector. They also agreed to strengthen joint efforts to combat terrorism, extremism and radicalisation, describing them as serious global challenges.

Carney said Canada and India are charting a new course for the future with expanded ambitions for their partnership. He termed the engagement as a step towards deepening economic and strategic cooperation.

The two leaders also deliberated on the security situation in West Asia, with Prime Minister Modi reiterating that India supports resolution of conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy.

Later in the day, the leaders are scheduled to interact with members of the business community to explore avenues for economic collaboration. Carney, accompanied by his wife Diana Fox Carney, is on an official visit to India from February 27 to March 2.
