Guwahati, 18 March (HS): The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday asserted that the state government has ushered in a new era of development, expressing confidence that the people will support Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections.

Addressing a press conference at the state BJP headquarters, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan, party spokesperson Kamal Kumar Medhi said that the electorate would compare the Congress party’s 60 years of rule with the 10 years of development under the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). He stated that the past decade of BJP governance would be remembered as a remarkable period in Assam’s history in terms of overall welfare and infrastructure growth.

Medhi highlighted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Centre has extended record financial assistance to Assam over the past 12 years, transforming the state’s development landscape. Frequent visits by central leaders, including the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister, have led to the launch of several key projects across the state.

He noted that Assam’s road infrastructure has witnessed a major transformation, with around 65,000 km of roads constructed in the past decade, significantly improving connectivity. Over the last five years, 1,330 bridges have been built, while major projects such as a ₹22,864 crore high-speed corridor in Silchar and multiple bridges over the Brahmaputra River are reshaping connectivity in the region.

The BJP spokesperson also emphasized advancements in the healthcare sector, stating that 15 medical colleges have been completed and institutions like AIIMS have been established in the state. He added that recent health projects worth ₹2,092 crore were launched, and over 16,500 children have benefited from life-saving heart surgeries.

On flood management, Medhi said that the government has made significant progress, constructing over 2,000 km of embankments in the past five years. He pointed out that during last year’s floods, embankment breaches were minimal compared to earlier years.

Highlighting welfare initiatives, he said that under Mission Basundhara, land pattas have been distributed to 4.5 lakh indigenous families. He also termed the granting of land rights to tea garden workers as a historic achievement, addressing a long-standing issue of over 200 years.

Reiterating confidence in the party’s prospects, Medhi said that given these unprecedented development achievements, the people of Assam are likely to bring the BJP-led NDA government back to power once again.----------
