Bhubaneswar, 16 March (H.S.): Amid the controversy surrounding cross-voting by some MLAs during the ongoing Rajya Sabha elections, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president and former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik made sharp remarks targeting those involved in the episode.

Reacting strongly, Patnaik alleged that some of the legislators who indulged in cross-voting have questionable backgrounds. He claimed that several of those who voted against the party line had criminal records and said their family backgrounds should also be examined.

Addressing party members, the Leader of Opposition in the Odisha Assembly said he had earlier warned them about attempts by the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies to influence the election through “horse-trading.” According to him, a number of individuals who supported the rival side were allegedly associated with past criminal cases.

Patnaik reiterated his allegation that efforts were being made to manipulate the election process through inducements and political maneuvering. He urged party members to remain alert and committed to the party’s principles.

Expressing concern over the broader situation in the state, the veteran leader said Odisha has faced challenges before and will continue to fight for democratic rights and economic development. He asserted that the BJD would remain committed to safeguarding the interests of the people and upholding democratic values.

The controversy erupted after certain legislators publicly acknowledged cross-voting in the Rajya Sabha election, triggering intense political debate in Odisha and sharp reactions from rival parties as well as from leaders within the BJD.
