Siliguri, 13 March (H.S.): Family members of a man killed in a hit-and-run incident and local residents staged a protest outside a court in Siliguri on Friday demanding strict punishment for the arrested accused.
According to police sources, the incident took place a few days ago on Sevoke Road when a speeding car hit a man identified as Shankar Chettri, a resident of Panitanki, killing him on the spot. A young woman was also injured in the incident.
The accused driver, Debangshu Pal Chowdhury, was arrested by police four days after the incident. A court had earlier remanded him to police custody and later to judicial custody.
On Friday, before the accused was produced in court, the victim’s family members and neighbours gathered outside the court gate and staged a demonstration. Protesters raised slogans while holding photographs of the accused and demanded the strictest punishment for him.
In view of the protest, a large police force was deployed in and around the court premises since morning to maintain law and order.
