Eight Acres of Illegal Poppy Cultivation Destroyed in Manipur

Imphal, 25 February (HS): A joint operation by security forces and the Forest Department led to the destruction of nearly eight acres of illegal poppy cultivation in Manipur, while 115 nakas and checkpoints were established across sensitive areas to ensure security and safe vehicular movement.

According to information received from Manipur Police Headquarters, a joint team comprising security personnel, Forest Department officials and an Executive Magistrate on Tuesday carried out an operation in the Sadim hill area under Senapati Police Station in Senapati district. During the drive, approximately eight acres of illicit opium poppy cultivation were destroyed. Two temporary huts found at the site, along with irrigation pipes, a spray pump and a water container, were also dismantled. No arrests have been made in connection with the case so far.

Police and the Forest Department have been conducting an extensive campaign against illegal poppy cultivation in remote hill areas for the past three years. It is believed that thousands of acres of opium cultivation have been destroyed during this period.

Meanwhile, security forces continue search operations and area domination exercises in border and other sensitive areas of the state, leading to the recovery of arms and ammunition.

On Tuesday, a total of 115 nakas and checkpoints were set up across various districts of Manipur, covering both hill and valley regions. However, no detentions were reported. Additionally, the movement of 165 vehicles carrying essential commodities along National Highway-37 was ensured. Adequate security has been deployed at vulnerable points, and security escorts have been provided along sensitive routes to facilitate free and safe movement of vehicles.------------
