Seoul, 23 February (HS): North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been reelected as general secretary of the ruling Workers’ Party during the ongoing party congress, state media reported on Sunday.

The congress, which began last Thursday, is expected to outline the country’s key political and military objectives for the next five years. Under party rules, the gathering, held every five years since 2016, elects the general secretary as the party’s top representative.

The Korean Central News Agency said Kim was reelected with unanimous support from delegates. The party credited his leadership with strengthening the country’s nuclear capabilities and enhancing its strategic position.

The meeting comes amid continued regional tensions and North Korea’s ongoing development of its military and nuclear programmes. Analysts expect the congress to set policy directions related to defence preparedness and economic self-reliance.

State media also reported that revisions to party rules were adopted during the session, though specific details were not disclosed. North Korea has maintained a firm stance on its security policies and has not resumed substantive diplomatic engagement with the United States and South Korea in recent years.
