The 54-year-old Voice of the People Party (VPP) leader and 2024 election victor—having decisively defeated three-term Congress MP Vincent H. Pala by over 370,000 votes—suddenly collapsed while playing futsal with friends at Mawlaim-Mawiong ground in Shillong on Thursday evening.

Rushed to Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital in Jaiaw, he was declared dead around 8:45 PM despite medical efforts, sending shockwaves through Meghalaya's political circles.
