New Delhi, 19 February (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlined three pivotal recommendations for ethical AI utilization during his address to global leaders at the AI Impact Summit on Thursday, emphasizing data autonomy, transparent regulations, and adherence to human values.

Vision for Global AI Ecosystem

In his opening plenary remarks, PM Modi expressed confidence that the summit would play a crucial role in shaping the global AI ecosystem, urging collaborative efforts to transform this technological disruption into humanity's greatest opportunity. He advocated respecting data ownership rights, establishing frameworks for AI training with secure, balanced, and reliable data, and creating a global trusted data framework as foundational steps.

Call for Glass-Box Transparency

The Prime Minister insisted that AI platforms maintain clear, transparent safety rules—a glass box approach replacing opaque black boxes—enabling verification, ensuring accountability, and promoting ethical business behavior. Using the paperclip problem in AI research as an example, he stressed that powerful technology requires explicit human values and guidance, with direction always determined by humans.

Empowering Humanity Over Power

Highlighting India's perspective of technology as a service for empowerment rather than dominance, PM Modi declared that AI must prioritize profit alongside purpose, fostering ethical norms with boundless scope to match AI's vast potential. Invoking Lord Buddha's wisdom—Right action comes from right understanding—he called for a collective roadmap yielding AI's positive impact through timely, well-intentioned decisions.

Lessons from Covid and Global South Priorities

Drawing parallels to Covid-19 collaboration—from vaccine development to supply chains—PM Modi noted how shared data and cooperation made the impossible possible, exemplifying technology's service to humanity as demonstrated in India's pandemic response. He acknowledged past technologies' role in discrimination, advocating accessible AI for all, centering Global South aspirations in governance, and positioning Aspirational India as a key player with initiatives like 38,000 GPUs operational, 24,000 more incoming, affordable computing for startups, and an AI Coast sharing over 7,500 datasets and 270 models nationally.
