New Delhi, 18 February (H.S.): The Supreme Court of India directed the Central Government on Wednesday to address racial discrimination faced by students from Northeast states studying across various parts of the country. A bench presided over by Chief Justice Suryakant deemed the petitioner's demands significant, mandating that they be placed before the government.

The court instructed the petitioner to furnish a copy of the petition to the Attorney General, who will present the matter to the Central Government.

Advocate Anoop Prakash Awasthi filed the public interest litigation citing the December 2025 racial attack in Dehradun that resulted in the murder of Anjel Chakma, an MBA student from Tripura. The plea seeks legislative amendments or guidelines to curb such discrimination.
