Tokyo, 08 November (H.S.): A powerful earthquake struck central Japan early Sunday, injuring at least 22 people, damaging shops and forcing residents to rush out of buildings. The tremor also shattered glass windows and sent goods tumbling from store shelves.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) measured the earthquake at magnitude 5.7, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded it at 5.5. It struck at 1:04 a.m. local time in Shizuoka Prefecture, at a depth of around 40 kilometres. Smaller aftershocks were also reported.
The tremors affected several areas, including neighbouring Aichi Prefecture, Hamamatsu, Kyoto, Nara, Yamanashi and Gifu. The strongest shaking was recorded in Aichi. Some people were injured after falling on staircases while attempting to leave buildings.
The JMA warned residents to remain alert for further strong earthquakes over the coming week, particularly during the next two to three days. Agency official Ayataka Ebita also urged people to watch out for landslides and falling rocks, especially if rainfall occurs.
Officials reported no apparent changes in the Nankai Trough, an area where scientists have warned of the possibility of a major earthquake.
As a precaution, Shinkansen bullet trains were operating at reduced speeds in the affected areas. Authorities also advised residents to keep essential supplies, including drinking water, food and batteries, ready and remain prepared for emergencies.
