Kolkata, 06 October (H.S.): As India steadily advances toward becoming the world's third-largest economy, aviation infrastructure and world-class connectivity have emerged as vital catalysts for growth. In this evolving landscape, West Bengal’s strategic footprint is expanding rapidly under the newly formed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) administration. The proposed Kalyani Greenfield Airport in Nadia district is being positioned not merely as a regional transit project, but as a transformative economic driver that will anchor Eastern India to the nation’s broader developmental trajectory. Expected to turn Kolkata into India’s third multi-airport metropolitan region—following Delhi-NCR and Mumbai—the initiative is poised to significantly accelerate national economic growth across multiple sectors.

A Global Gateway for Industrial and Technological Investment
Senior journalist and aviation analyst Naresh Srivastava observed that the Kalyani–Haringhata corridor has already evolved into a prominent hub for education, healthcare, and manufacturing. The region houses premier institutions such as the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Kalyani University, biotechnology research parks, and various industrial clusters. Srivastava noted that a greenfield airport will grant this industrial belt direct national and international aviation links, attracting substantial Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) while providing a decisive impetus to medical tourism and the information technology sector, thereby contributing meaningfully to the national GDP.

Powerhouse for Logistics and Cross-Border Trade
Highlighting the strategic potential of the project, a senior state secretariat official told Hindusthan Samachar that the airport will serve as a cornerstone for India’s 'Act East' policy and enhance cross-border commerce with neighbouring nations. Kalyani boasts robust connectivity through National Highway 12 (NH-12) and an extensive rail network. Its geographical proximity to the Bangladesh border further positions it as an ideal multi-modal logistics and air-cargo hub. A state-of-the-art air cargo ecosystem will streamline supply chains for Eastern India’s agricultural yield, textile output, and manufactured goods, strengthening the country’s export competitiveness.

Easing Congestion and Enhancing Ease of Doing Business
The existing Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Dum Dum is currently operating near peak capacity amid rising passenger and freight traffic. The development of a secondary greenfield facility in Kalyani will distribute air-traffic congestion, reducing turnaround times for business travel and freight movement. This structural relief is widely seen as an essential step toward enhancing overall Ease of Doing Business metrics in the eastern corridor.

Catalyst for Employment and Regional Transformation
Spanning approximately 2,000 acres, the mega greenfield project is expected to generate hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs. The surrounding ecosystem will stimulate investments in hospitality, commercial complexes, surface transport, and retail networks. Beyond transforming Nadia, Murshidabad, and North 24 Parganas districts, the venture will provide local youth with access to global-standard employment opportunities.
Underlining the political and administrative commitment behind the initiative, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari recently announced that airport expansion is now a top developmental priority. Criticizing the previous Mamata Banerjee administration for allegedly obstructing central infrastructure initiatives, Adhikari emphasized that the current government is working in complete synergy with the Union Government's flagship UDAN scheme to revive, upgrade, and construct modern airports across West Bengal. Conceived as more than a transit hub, the Kalyani Greenfield Airport is envisioned as a strategic bridge integrating Eastern India's trade, enterprise, and workforce into the global economic mainstream.
