Sanaa(Yemen), 04 October (H.S.): Saudi-backed government forces in Yemen have launched airstrikes against Houthi-controlled areas, including the capital Sanaa, in a major escalation of the conflict. Yemen’s government-aligned forces said they carried out 97 precision strikes against Houthi rebels on the Al-Tawahi front in Taiz province and in the Al-Baha district of Lahij province.

According to an Al Jazeera report, Yemeni Armed Forces spokesperson Brigadier General Majid Abdullah Al-Nuzaili said the operations involved aircraft, drones, artillery, missiles and snipers. In a post on X, he claimed that 260 Houthi fighters were killed in the attacks. He also said that Houthi military vehicles, along with transport and supply vehicles, were destroyed or damaged.

However, just hours earlier, Al-Nuzaili had said that government-aligned forces had carried out 257 attacks against Houthi positions in Sanaa, Midi, Baqim, Al-Jawf, Marib, Al-Bayda, Lahij and Taiz. He claimed that at least 700 fighters had been killed in the attacks.

The latest escalation comes amid renewed fighting between the internationally recognised Yemeni government, which is backed by Saudi Arabia, and the Iran-aligned Houthi movement.
