TelAviv, 04 October (H.S.):

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Smitt Machhar, an Indian pilot with flydubai, to light ceremonial torches at next year’s Israel Independence Day celebrations.

During a telephone conversation, Netanyahu praised Machhar for his bravery, describing him as a hero of India and Israel’s courageous people, as well as of the wider world.

Netanyahu commended the pilot for demonstrating courage and a strong sense of responsibility. Earlier, Dubai Crown Prince Hamdan bin Mohammed had also visited Machhar in hospital and praised him for his actions.

However, Netanyahu’s invitation does not constitute an official announcement of the final selection of torch lighters. In Israel, those chosen to light torches during Independence Day celebrations are selected by a public advisory committee. Their names are subsequently approved through the prescribed ministerial process. Israeli Transport Minister Miri Regev has played a key role in this process.

Lighting a ceremonial torch on Israel’s Independence Day is regarded as a significant honour. The ceremony generally recognises individuals who have made notable contributions to the country and its society.
