Bhutan's NCHM Issues Public Advisory After Glacial Lake Outburst Flood

Guwahati, 30 October (HS): Bhutan's National Centre for Hydrology and Meteorology (NCHM) has issued a public advisory following the glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) reported on October 29, warning residents living along vulnerable river valleys to remain alert.

According to the NCHM, an artificial lake has developed at Taktsemakhang, near the confluence of Sintaphu Chhu and Lungu Chhu, also known as Gangchen Tag Chhu, following the outburst.

In view of the potential risks, people residing along the Mochhu and Punatsangchhu river valleys have been urged to exercise caution, stay away from riverbanks and avoid areas susceptible to flooding. The authorities have also advised residents to take all necessary precautionary measures.

The NCHM said it is closely monitoring the evolving situation in coordination with relevant agencies. It added that further advisories and updates would be issued as additional information becomes available.----------
