Cyclone Arnab’s Impact: Nepal Warns of Rainfall and Snowfall from October 29 to 31

Kathmandu, 29 October (H.S.): The influence of Cyclone Arnab and westerly winds is expected to bring rainfall and snowfall to various parts of Nepal, prompting authorities to urge residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a weather warning, stating that conditions across the country could be affected from October 29 to 31. According to the department’s forecast, snowfall and snowstorms are possible in Himalayan districts on Thursday, while rainfall and snowfall are expected across several parts of the country on Friday and Saturday.

In view of the anticipated weather changes, residents of Humla, Mugu, Dolpa, Jumla, Kalikot, Jajarkot, Dailekh and other districts have been advised to exercise particular caution on Thursday. The department has also urged the public to monitor regular weather updates and official advisories.

The forecast rainfall could increase the risk of landslides, floods and debris flows. Snowstorms and avalanches are also possible in mountainous areas, raising concerns over public safety and travel conditions.

People have been advised to avoid travelling to mountainous regions wherever possible. Those who must travel for essential reasons have been urged to check the latest weather conditions before setting out. Travellers using vulnerable roads and trekking routes in hilly and mountainous areas have been specifically advised to pay close attention to weather forecasts.

As the paddy harvesting season is underway, farmers have also been urged to consult weather forecasts before harvesting their crops and transporting them from the fields to their homes.

Paddy left cut in the fields could become soaked by rain and suffer damage. Farmers have therefore been advised to plan harvesting and storage activities in accordance with the weather forecast to protect their crops from potential losses.

In response to the anticipated weather-related risks, chief district officers in several hilly and mountainous districts have also appealed to residents to exercise caution while travelling.

Junu Hamal Dhakal, Chief District Officer of Dolpa, said people had been advised to travel carefully, taking prevailing weather conditions into account. Similarly, the Humla District Administration Office has issued a notice urging residents to check the weather forecast before embarking on journeys.

To minimise the risks associated with the adverse weather, residents, farmers and travellers have been urged to regularly consult official weather forecasts and exercise heightened caution in vulnerable areas.
