London, 29 October (H.S.): British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said the United Kingdom is making every possible effort to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and ease tensions in the region. He also confirmed that the issue had been discussed with US President Donald Trump.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Burnham said the UK was working to prevent the situation from deteriorating further and to ensure that the strategically important waterway was fully reopened. He stressed that these efforts must also be accompanied by measures to ensure that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons capability.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime route for global energy supplies. Any disruption to shipping through the waterway could affect international oil and gas flows and have wider repercussions for global markets.
