WASHINGTON, October 28 (HS/RIA Novosti) - US President Donald Trump has said that he would welcome former Brazilian presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro and his family to the United States following his defeat in the country's election.
A White House representative told RIA Novosti that the US Department of State would issue visas to Bolsonaro and his family members, allowing them entry to the US. CNN Brasil reported that Bolsonaro had arrived in the US with his family.
I would approve. I think they're fine people … I think it would be okay with me, Trump told reporters on Tuesday night when asked how he would react to Bolsonaro's arrival in the US.
The US leader added, however, that he did not know Bolsonaro's current whereabouts, suggesting that he might be in Argentina.
On Monday, a Brazilian court ordered that Flavio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, surrender his passport as part of a money-laundering investigation. He has denied the allegations.
The runoff of Brazil's presidential election took place on October 25. Lula da Silva emerged victorious, receiving 51.79% of the vote, while his opponent Bolsonaro secured 48.21%.
