BELGRADE, October 27 (HS/RIA Novosti) - The head of Serbia's state-owned energy company Srbijagas, Dusan Bajatovic, told RIA Novosti on Tuesday that he did not expect Belgrade to impose sanctions on Russia or abandon energy cooperation with it after the recent parliamentary elections.
The current three-month natural gas supply agreement between Russian energy giant Gazprom and Srbijagas expires on December 31. Gazprom is scheduled to supply Serbia with up to 2.6 billion cubic meters of gas in 2026, covering 90% of the country's needs, although Serbia also has its own reserves.
If there is political wisdom in Serbia, then I do not expect any sanctions against Russia, for two reasons. First, beyond our cooperation in the energy sector, specifically in gas supplies, Russia is Serbia's most significant political partner and defender ... Therefore, I do not anticipate any sanctions or a withdrawal from energy cooperation, Bajatovic said.
Secondly, the geopolitical shifts in the world are such that imposing sanctions on Russia now would be like siding with Hitler in 1944, Srbijagas head added.
On Monday, the Serbian Electoral Commission said that the coalition led by former Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic gained 39.29% in the country's snap parliamentary elections, while the Student List secured 52.54%. Vucic conceded defeat, claiming that the US deep state and forces from EU countries orchestrated the election outcome.
