Dhaka, 27 October (H.S.):
A group of people allegedly attacked the office of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), known as Mukti Bhaban, in the Paltan area of Dhaka at around 10 pm on Monday night. The CPB held activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami responsible for the attack, while the BNP denied the allegations.
According to a report by the Dhaka Tribune, CPB Central Committee President Sazzad Zahir Chandan said a group of young people had launched a sudden attack on the party office. He blamed activists of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami for the incident.
Chandan said the situation arose after former Bangladesh Students’ Union president Dipak Shil was detained in the evening and subsequently released.
According to Chandan, the attackers accused CPB activists of raising the slogan “Joy Bangla”. However, he maintained that no such slogan had been raised from the party office.
Paltan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ariful Islam said that following Shil’s release, his supporters had celebrated by raising “Joy Bangla” slogans.
He said some people, angered by the slogans, subsequently attacked the CPB office. Police are investigating the incident, he added, while personnel have been deployed at the offices of both groups.
