Washington, 19 October (H.S.): Coastal areas across the northeastern United States could face worsening flood conditions in the coming days due to a storm, according to the US National Weather Service (NWS).

In a statement, the NWS warned that persistent strong onshore winds could trigger moderate coastal flooding. The situation could become dangerous, potentially causing erosion along coastlines and posing risks to communities in vulnerable areas.

The adverse conditions are expected to persist until the middle of the week, affecting a broad stretch of the coastline from southern New Jersey to the coast of North Carolina. Wind speeds in some areas could exceed 20 metres per second, or approximately 45 miles per hour.

The NWS cautioned that conditions were deteriorating and could become even more severe in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Fox News reported that water levels in some coastal areas of North Carolina and Virginia could rise more than one metre above normal levels.

Authorities have already issued evacuation orders for residents of an island in North Carolina, directing them to move to safer locations amid the threat of rising water levels.
