MOSCOW, October 16 (HS/RIA Novosti) - The existing infrastructure in Azerbaijan, in addition to the gas pipeline project through Azerbaijani territory, could help supply gas from Russia to Iran, Iranian Deputy Oil Minister and head of the National Iranian Gas Company Saeed Tavakoli told RIA Novosti on Friday.
The existing infrastructure in Azerbaijan can help with the issue of gas supplies from Russia to Iran. In other words, we have several approaches and stages, one of which is the use of already existing infrastructure, Tavakoli said on the sidelines of Russian Energy Week, commenting on the timeline for laying a gas pipeline in Azerbaijan for Russian gas supplies to Iran.
The official also expressed hope for the implementation of the project to supply Russian gas to Iran. Responding to a question about involving Russian energy giant Gazprom in gas production in Iran, Tavakoli noted that there are no such plans at present, but pointed to Tehran's readiness to use the potential of Russian companies in this area.
In January 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that with the implementation of the gas pipeline project to Iran, the volume of Russian supplies could eventually amount to 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year. However, it is necessary to start with small volumes, up to 2 billion cubic meters, Putin noted.
Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilev also specified that the gas pipeline from Russia to Iran would pass through Azerbaijan, and the parties are at the final stage of negotiations and are agreeing on approaches to the price.
The Russian Energy Week is taking place in Moscow from October 14-16. RIA Novosti is a media partner of the forum.
