Lakhimpur (Assam), 8January (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday made sharp political remarks in Lakhimpur, alleging that appeasement politics would bring further misfortune for the Assamese people and claiming that the population of Miya Muslims in the state could rise to 40©.

Addressing the media, the Chief Minister said he does not see the presence or impact of any effective opposition in Assam. “There is no opposition in the state. I have not seen any influence of the opposition,” Dr Sarma remarked.

Taking a direct swipe at the Congress, the Chief Minister said the party has lost its relevance in Assam. He alleged that, barring illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, no one supports the Congress in the state. “Congress has no relevance in Assam. There is no need to give any importance to the Congress,” he added.

Dr Sarma’s comments come amid continued political sparring between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress ahead of key political developments in the state.-----------
