Pune, 06 January (H.S.): Veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister Suresh Kalmadi (82) passed away early this morning at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune. Kalmadi had been admitted to the hospital a few days ago for medical treatment. He is survived by his wife, son, daughter-in-law, two married daughters, a son-in-law, and grandchildren.
Kalmadi’s body has been kept at his residence, Kalmadi House in Pune, for the public to pay their last respects. His funeral will be held this evening at Vaikunth Crematorium in Navipeth, Pune.
Born on May 1, 1944, Kalmadi served as a pilot in the Indian Air Force before entering politics. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1982 to 1996 and contested Lok Sabha elections in 1996 and 2004. He represented Pune as a Member of Parliament for several terms and also served as Minister of State for Railways.
Beyond politics, Kalmadi made a significant mark in the sports world. He played a pivotal role in organizing the Pune Festival and Pune Marathon, events that brought international recognition to the city. He also served as the President of the Indian Olympic Association.
During his tenure, India hosted the Commonwealth Games, although he faced allegations of corruption related to the event. In 2011, he was arrested in connection with the case, and the Congress party suspended him. This marked the end of his political career, which had been centered in Pune for decades.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a closure report in the case 15 years later, clearing Kalmadi of all charges.
Supporters in Pune celebrated the verdict, but by then, Kalmadi’s political life had already come to an end. He had been battling illness for some time.
His demise has cast a shadow over Pune’s political and social circles, where he was affectionately known as the Sarvashreshtha (most distinguished) of Pune. Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, acknowledging his contributions to both sports and public service.
