New Delhi, 06 January (H.S.): Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Security Department has filed a complaint with Delhi Police regarding the alleged use of objectionable and inflammatory slogans outside Sabarmati Hostel. The incident occurred on Monday night (January 5), and a video of the event has gone viral on social media.
The JNU Security Department sent a formal letter to the Officer-in-Charge of Vasant Kunj (North) Police Station today, requesting the registration of an FIR.
According to the letter, a program was held outside Sabarmati Hostel at around 10 PM on January 5, described as the sixth anniversary of the violence that took place at JNU on January 5, 2020. The event was titled “A Night of Resistance with Gorilla Dhaba” and was attended by approximately 30–35 students.
The program was organized by a student group within the university.Initially, the event appeared to be limited to marking the anniversary. However, after the judicial rulings on the bail petitions of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, the tone of the program reportedly changed.
It is alleged that some students began raising highly offensive, provocative, and inflammatory slogans, which have been described as contemptuous of the Supreme Court. The complaint names nine students involved in the incident.
The Security Department stated that such slogans violate the norms of democratic dissent, contravene the university’s code of conduct, and threaten public order, campus peace, and university security. The letter further noted that the slogans were deliberately and repeatedly raised, indicating a planned action rather than a spontaneous outburst.
Security officials and personnel were present at the scene and monitored the situation throughout. The JNU Security Department has requested that Delhi Police register an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Copies of the complaint have also been sent to the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar’s office.
